With the situation changing rapidly on the Gulf Coast due to the recent oil spill, Ducks Unlimited biologist Dr. Tom Moorman, director of conservation planning in the Southern Region, offered his thoughts and observations concerning coastal areas where DU works to provide habitat that sustains millions of wintering waterfowl and the resident mottled duck population.
Some highlights from Dr Moorman's Letter:
- At this time, it is not possible to say what impacts the oil spill may have on waterfowl
- Restoration of the Gulf Coast is bigger than any single agency or organization can solve on its own
- Public policy work is critical to conserving the Gulf Coast
- DU's long-term approach is to use the best available science to grow our direct conservation program and policy efforts
- DU has contacted various state and federal partners to offer any assistance we can in the near-term

Former U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Director to Lead Conservation Organization

MEMPHIS, Tenn., April 14, 2010 – Ducks Unlimited Inc., America’s leading wetlands and waterfowl conservation group, announced today that H. Dale Hall has been named the organization’s new chief executive officer. A former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (2005-2009), Hall is widely respected as a visionary conservationist and one of the country’s most effective wildlife professionals.
"We are extremely pleased that Dale Hall is stepping into this key role for Ducks Unlimited," said DU President John R. Pope. "Dale is a consummate conservation leader whose energy, vision and dedication will help our organization meet the serious challenges facing North America’s waterfowl. In light of increasing threats to the quantity and quality of our continent’s waterfowl habitat, he is uniquely qualified to lead DU at this critical juncture."
