AF Canada Goose Harvest Derivation - By Larry Hindman

Have you ever wondered how many resident or migrant Canada geese are in the hunting season harvest.  Band recoveries are weighted using estimated population size and the number of adult geese banded per  population.

Here is a table that show the harvest derivation of Canada geese for each area of the flyway (all seasons combined for 2004 through 2008).  AFRP = AF resident Population; AP (HB) = Atlantic Population (Hudson Bay coast); AP (UB) = Atlantic Population (Ungava Bay coast); NAP = North Atlantic (banded at PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador); SJBP = Southern James Bay, and MF Giant = Mississippi Flyway Giant or Resident Canada geese.

Note that states like PA, NY, NJ and a few northern AF states where Atlantic Population (AP) goose bag limits are larger (3 per day) harvest far fewer migrant geese than MD (2 per day). These states are permitted larger bag limits to target AF resident Canada geese.
